NEW YORK — Award-winning author Jacqueline Woodson has been named the country’s new National Ambassador for Young People’s Literature.

The Library of Congress and two other organizations announced Woodson’s appointment. She will serve two years. Woodson succeeds graphic novelist Gene Luen Yang. She won the National Book Award for the narrative-in-verse “Brown Girl Dreaming” and is known for other books such as the novels “Feathers” and “Another Brooklyn.”

The ambassador position was established in 2008, with a mission to “raise national awareness” about the role of literature in young people’s lives. Previous ambassadors include Walter Dean Myers and Katherine Paterson.
