City removing snow in priority areas

MEDICINE HAT, AB — After the most recent cold snap and snowy weather, the city is once again focusing on snow removal.

Crews were out Wednesday morning, clearing the snow that had accumulated on 13th Avenue Southeast.

“What we had been concentrating on up until this point was snow and ice control,” said Jeremy Petryshyn, manager of operations with the city’s Municipal Works department. “Over the last couple of weeks, we’ve had a number of snow events, and so city crews have been out plowing and sanding roadways, as well as addressing removing snow from our sidewalks.”

Snow that is cleared is brought to two locations, one near the Medicine Hat airport, and one on 23 Street Northeast.

Petryshyn says snow removal becomes the focus when lanes on major roadways become narrow for drivers.

“We’re out plowing out category one roadways, as well as sanding roadways, and so that gets done first,” he said. “Once were done that, then we look at options around snow removal.”

In the next several days, areas near Southview Drive and parts of Southridge will be the focus of snow removal. Starting on Sunday, the city shifts to a night schedule to tackle the areas near the Medicine Hat hospital and downtown.

“We’re going to be working from 10 at night until six in the morning, just to alleviate those traffic concerns,” said Petryshyn.

Parking restrictions will be set up in those areas to give crews more space to work.

Petryshyn adds the city does sand the roads in other major areas of the city, and if they have concern about snow and ice building up in their neighbourhood streets to contact Municipal Works.
