Sports Year in Review – July 2017

MEDICINE HAT, AB – Sports in Medicine Hat continued to heat up through the summer, with baseball season in full swing, the Special Olympics Alberta Summer Games and hockey training camps.

Here are a few of the stories which caught the eyes of readers in July

July 1 – Tigers and Bandits head to rookie camps 

Members of the Medicine Hat Tigers and Brooks Bandits drafted in the NHL made the trek to rookie camps at the start of the month

July 1 – Beat the Heat 2017 

The Medicine Hat Skateboarding Association’s annual summer competition took over the Kinsmen Skate Plaza on Canada Day

July 3 – Curtis Valk inks NHL contact

The former Medicine Hat Tiger signed with the Florida Panthers this summer, and is currently playing for their AHL affiliate Springfield Thunderbirds

July 7 – Special Olympics Alberta Summer Games 

The event brought hundreds of athletes from across the province for several days of competition, and a few local athletes also had strong showings. 

July 10 – Sage Watson breaks 24-year-old record 

At the 2017 Canadian Track and Field Championships, the Seven Persons product ran a time of 54.97 in the women’s 400 metre hurdles, setting a new Canadian Championships record. Watson later won her first race as a professional in Madrid several days later 

July 11- Cubs get new sponsor 

The Heritage Junior Hockey League team is being sponsored by the local Travelodge for the next three years. The team unveiled new jerseys, new colours and are known as the Medicine Hat Travelodge Cubs.

July 13 – Murschell makes semi-finals at darts championship

Dawson Murschell won his first match at at the World Series of Darts Festival in Las Vegas against David Cameron winning six games to five, but was defeated by Willard Bruguier for a spot in the finals six games to three.

July 25- Willie Desjardins named Team Canada coach 

The former Medicine Hat Tigers coach will be behind the bench during the 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeonchang , South Korea.

July 27 – Mavericks clinch playoff spot 

The Medicine Hat Mavericks secured a playoff spot during the WMBL baseball season in July

July 30 –Medicine Hat Stampede wraps up 

After three days of rodeo action, the champions were crowned at the Medicine Hat Exhibition and Stampede for another year.
