Mom thanks fan for act of kindness at Tigers game

MEDICINE HAT, AB — A local mom and her son are thanking the man who performed a random act of kindness at a recent hockey game.

Cheryl Stromsmoe and her six year old son Grady don’t get the chance to watch the Medicine Hat Tigers very often. So when they got tickets to last Friday’s game against the Red Deer Rebels, they were obviously very excited.

Little did they know this would become a memorable night for a completely different reason.

After the first period, the two were in the Tigers souvenir store and looking around, and purchased a foam Tiger claw. When they returned to their seats, they began talking with the person sitting next to them.

“He was asking if we were going to get a jersey, and I said ‘Well, I’d love to, but we have to wait until payday,’” Cheryl said.

Their seat neighbor then asked Grady what size he wore, and out of nowhere offered to buy him a Tigers jersey.

“He said, ‘Well, let’s go get one,’” she smiled.

The three made their way back to the Tigers store, where the man, who the family had never met, lived up to his promise.

But, it didn’t stop there.

The older gentleman told Grady to pick out his favourite toque from the store, and then identified two members of the Tigers not dressed for the game who were standing just outside of the shop.

Grady got his new jersey signed by the players, moments after it was purchased.

Cheryl has trouble putting into words how thankful she is for the man’s kindness and generosity.

“When we came back to the seats, we were so overwhelmed and thankful,” Cheryl said. “He kept saying ‘thank you so much,’ he was so excited to have it.

“We just couldn’t believe there was a kind heart like that.”

Cheryl said she didn’t get the man’s name, but wishes she did, just to say thank you.

“Grady was so excited,” she said. “It was something that I knew he’d love to have. We’ve talked about it before but never had the opportunity to get one.

“For it being such a surprise, it meant a lot to our family.”
