Sports Year in Review – February 2017

MEDICINE HAT, AB — A variety of sports in the region made headlines throughout February, including hockey, boxing and track and field. Here are a few of the stories that caught the attention of our readers.

Feb. 1 – Brooks Bandits earn top ranking in CJHL

After winning 17 games in a row, the Canadian Junior Hockey League ranked the Bandits as the number one Junior A team in Canada at the start of February.

Feb. 2 – Herter fighting for second chance 

Local boxer Corwin Herter talks to CHAT Television about how boxing gave him a second chance after he fell in with the wrong crowd and was facing jail time.

Feb. 4 – First ever Devil’s Duel lacrosse tournament

The Medicine Hat Lacrosse Association hosted a 4-on-4 winter tournament in February, with several local teams coming away with gold medals.

Feb. 11 – Panthers Track Club meets for first time 

The local track club held its first-ever indoor meet in Medicine Hat at the Family Leisure Centre, attracting more than 60 athletes.

Feb. 12 – Cubs eliminated from HJHL playoffs 

The Medicine Hat Cubs were swept by the Coaldale Copperheads in two games of the Heritage Junior Hockey League Playoffs, falling 9-1 in the second game.

Feb. 12 – Ed Horvath Tournament wraps up

The U14A Medicine Hat Attack won their second gold medal in a row at the annual ringette tournament, defeating the Calgary Allegro in the finals.

Feb. 21 – Marek Langhamer earns first NHL win 

The former Tigers goaltender made his NHL debut in February, helping the Arizona Coyotes hold on for a 3-2 victory over Anaheim.

Feb. 25 – Rattlers volleyball team loses provincial finals 

The Rattlers fell in five sets in the ACAC men’s volleyball finals to Red Deer College. Although the team finished with a silver medal, they still qualified for the CCAA National Championship.

Feb. 26 – Tigers retire Tom Lysiak’s jersey 

The Medicine Hat Tigers retired the #9 jersey of the late Tom Lysiak during a home game against the Brandon Wheat Kings. Lysiak, who passed away in 2016, captured back-to-back league scoring titles during the 1971-72 and 1972-73 seasons, the only Tiger to do so and led the Tigers to their first WHL Championship in 1973. Lysiak was drafted by the Atlanta Flames in 1973, and spent 13 seasons in the NHL with the Flames and Chicago Blackhawks.
