Golf simulator opens at Cottonwood Coulee Golf Course

MEDICINE HAT, AB – A dive into technology from one local golf club is allowing golfers in Medicine Hat to break out the sticks over the winter months.

On Saturday, Cottonwood Coulee Golf Course officially opened their new golf simulator to the public after weeks of preparation.

Located inside the clubhouse, the Foresight Sports simulator allows golfers to use their own clubs and hit golf balls at a screen to play through 10 different courses around the world.

Groups of over four golfers are allowed to take part, without the risk of losing golf balls or holding up pace of play.

It’s the first simulator of its kind in Medicine Hat and is available to rent throughout the winter for $35 per hour during the day or $40 per hour during evenings and weekends.

General Manager Mac Baker said the investment made sense with no sustained use of the clubhouse once the golf season ended.

“We weren’t using our clubhouse for anything over the winter,” he said. “So, it gave us a chance to utilize the space and bring people down here.”

Local golfer Chris McEachen was among those the first group to test out the new system on Saturday and said it’s a great alternative during the winter months.

“We’ve been talking about something like this forever, looking forward to something that we could do in the off-season,” said McEachen. “Especially being the hardcore golfers that we are in the summer time, it’s tough to put the clubs away in the fall and wait until spring time. So, this is definitely a nice opportunity to get out and smash the ball around a little bit.”

Baker added it’s exciting to have such state of the art technology in Medicine Hat.

“It’s remarkable how accurate they are,” said Baker. “A lot of pros, a lot of companies use these same monitors for fittings. It’s the same monitors used in Golf Towns across Canada to fit clubs, the accuracy is impressive.”

Cottonwood Coulee will be hosting an open house on Saturday, which will include a ‘closest to the pin’ contest on the golf simulator, with all money raised going towards the Medicine Hat and District Food Bank.

It will cost $5 per play for the contest, while the open house will run between 10:00 am and 5:00 pm.
