DRUMHELLER, Alta. – A southern Alberta woman who admitted to stealing money collected during a family friend’s cancer fundraiser has escaped jail time.

Ashley Fredrickson of Drumheller has been given a one-year conditional sentence and six months of house arrest after pleading guilty to a charge of theft under $5,000.

The 34-year-old woman has also been ordered to complete 50 hours of community service and pay back about $2,500.

Court heard Brandon Hall was diagnosed with cancer and began undergoing treatment in 2015.

About a year later, residents and businesses in Drumheller held a number of fundraisers to help cover his expenses.

The RCMP started investigating when a complaint was filed about donated money that hadn’t reached Hall’s family. (CTV Calgary)
