Province reports four deaths from influenza so far this season

EDMONTON, AB — The total number of people dead from influenza in Alberta sits at four, two weeks into the season.

According to the most recent flu report, one more death from the flu has been reported in the Calgary zone, bringing the total in that zone up to three. One person has already died from flu in the South Zone, which includes Medicine Hat and Lethbridge.

The number of laboratory cases of influenza has also jumped to 408, up from 300 in the first week. Out of those cases, 345 are of the Influenza A strain, while 52 are from the Influenza B strain. The remaining 11 are from strains not yet known.

Two weeks into the season, 132 people across the province have been hospitalized from influenza, with the majority of those hospitalized in the Calgary zone. A total of 81 people in that zone have been hospitalized, followed by 21 in the Edmonton Zone, 11 in the Central Zone, and 10 in the Northern Zone.

In the South Zone, nine have been hospitalized, up one from last week.

A total of 639,305 doses of influenza vaccine have been issued so far this season. The vaccine is free for people aged six months and older, and available at local pharmacies.

The flu report is released every Thursday.
