$87,750 donated to Margery E. Yuill Cancer Centre

MEDICINE HAT, AB — A large donation handed out Thursday afternoon will assist patients at the Medicine Hat Regional Hospital.

A total of $87,750 was donated to the Margery E. Yuill Cancer Centre, raised by the Medicine Hat Golf and County Club and the Yuill Family Foundation.

The money was raised at the 21st annual Breast Cancer Charity Golf Tournament hosted by the Golf and Country Club this summer. This year, the tournament raised $43,875. The Foundation then matched the money raised.

“It’s nice to see the Golf Tournament continue the way it is, raising decent funds,” said Bill Yuill, chairman and CEO of the Monarch Corporation. “We’re proud to be part of the whole process, and see that our contribution we’re making is going to something pretty special here in Medicine Hat.”

The centre bears the name of Bill’s mother, and he says he is proud to keep supporting the centre. Margery Yuill was a nurse at the Medicine Hat Regional Hospital, and passed away from cancer in 1965.

“It’s a nice way to remember her and make a contribution to the community that would serve the folks around Medicine Hat, southeastern Alberta and southwest Saskatchewan,” he said.

The centre allows residents to receive treatment in Medicine Hat, rather than travelling to Calgary or Edmonton. There are eight examination rooms, and space for 12 treatments to run simultaneously.

In September, the Cancer Centre moved into its new location in the renovated hospital. Dan Thomas, who manages the centre, says the donations from the golf tournament and the Yuill Foundation are important for the facility.

“It has been essential,” he said. “The years that it has been going on, and Mr. Yuill matching the donation, there is a great partnership there.”

Thomas says the funds are used to help make patients comfortable while they are undergoing treatment. The centre has eight examination rooms, and has the space for 12 treatments to run simultaneously.
