MEDICINE HAT, AB – Medicine Hat Police have re-opened 8th Street Northwest to traffic after disposing of a suspicious item Thursday afternoon.

Police had a section of the street in Crescent Heights blocked off for several hours after the item was found outside Servus Credit Union shortly after 4 p.m.

According to Staff Sgt. Kelsey Fraser, police received a call from someone on the street, saying they saw the item was left in front of the bank by another person.  Businesses on the street were closed as a precaution.

The Explosive Disposal Unit was called in to remotely render the device safe. The Forensic Unit has examined the scene, and has re-opened the street as of 8 p.m.

An earlier release from the police service indicated the item was initially believed to be an improvised explosive device. Police have confirmed the item left in front of the bank was not an explosive.

The investigation is currently in its early stages, but police say there is no concern for public safety at this time.
