MEDICINE HAT, AB – Four ends is all it took to decide the ladies champion of the Medicine Hat Charity Classic on Monday.

In the finals in was an all-Saskatchewan matchup between the Caryle rink of Candace Chisholm (5-1) and the Penny Barker rink (5-1) out of Moose Jaw.

Chisholm took a 1-0 lead in the first end, before stealing an additional four points in the second end to take a 5-0.

Chisholm said her team was able to convert on a few windows of opportunity, especially in that second end.

“Kind of just got lucky on some misses, made the right shot at the right time, good rock placement for us,” said Chisholm. “So, yeah it worked out.”

In the third end, Barker made well use of the hammer to score her first two points of the match and drop Chisholm’s lead to 5-2.

The Chisholm rink erased any doubt of a victory in the fourth end however, picking up another three points.

Both sides exchanged handshakes after the fourth, giving the Chisholm rink an 8-2 victory and the Medicine Hat Charity Classic championship.

According to Chisholm, the sweepers did an excellent job of reading the ice and securing the championship win.

“They judged the rocks really well,” she said. “I think we struggled early on a little bit with rock placement but as the game went on, I mean it was a short game I guess, but we picked up on the ice conditions and they did well. Yeah, proud of them.”

Still early in the season for the Chisholm rink, she’s hoping that this past weekend’s success will translate over their next few tournaments ahead of play-downs.

“It’s our second [bonspiel] of the year,” she said. “So, it was kind of a good way to start I guess, our season basically. So, hopefully we can just keep rolling.”

For their efforts, the Chisholm team takes home $5,500 for winning the bonspiel, while a second place finish guaranteed $3,500 for the Barker rink.

In the men’s quarter-finals on Monday morning, Saskatoon’s Josh Heidt rink shutout the Jason Ackerman rink 8-0 to advance to the semi-finals.

Last year’s Alberta champion in Brendan Bottcher took down Saskatchewan champion Adam Casey in seven ends 6-3.

Edmonton’s Karsten Sturmay also advanced to the semi-finals over Ted Appelman with a 6-1 final score.

Meanwhile, it was a comeback victory for Alberta’s Jamie King defeating Brent Pierce from British Columbia by a 5-4 final.

Semi-final action will get underway at 12:30 pm at the Medicine Hat Curling Club, with Team Heidt taking on Team Bottcher and Team Sturmay facing Team King.
