Oyen to begin first phase of railyard upgrade

OYEN, AB — The Town of Oyen is getting upgrades to its rail yard.

In a news release on Wednesday, the town announced it the first phase of the Oyen Rail Yard and Logistics Park project. The project will see the existing railyard north of the town be developed and expanded. The project is a partnership between the town and the Special Areas Board.

The release says the logistics park will be capable of handling 2,500 cars a year, which will bring in and ship a variety of products, from agriculture to industrial equipment.

The estimated cost of the first phase is $2.1 million, which includes existing rail upgrades, building new rail lines and preparing the site for the installation. The work is expected to begin later this fall.

The release also states once completed, it will serve as a transportation hub for companies. Iron Horse Energy, based in Medicine Hat, is quoted in the release, noting it will set up a frac sand distribution centre in Oyen.

CN Rail will continue to be the main rail line that operates in the yard.
