Meet the Candidate: Hugh English

MEDICINE HAT, AB – Hugh English hopes his experience in the community will resonate with voters on October 16th.

English is best known in Medicine Hat for his work with non-profit groups, including the Canadian National Institute for the Blind, Big Brothers and Big Sisters, and the Canadian Red Cross. He has also served on the Palliser Health Board. This is his first time seeking election at the municipal level.

“It’s certainly something I’ve thought about for some time,” he said. “In speaking with some people in the community, some people have been encouraging, saying ‘you should run.’ I guess the timing seemed to be right, personally.”

“I think that my experience, both work-wise, and my community involvement, are relevant to the duties as councillor.”

English says the city’s economy is his biggest priority for councillors this election.

“The city faces a significant shortage of revenue due to the non-energy dividend,” he said. “A 25 per cent reduction in revenue is significant for any organization.”

English adds he is in support of continuing the Financially Fit for the Future initiative to help keep costs down for the city.

If he is elected, English says a collaborative approach is necessary to determine the next steps the city will take.

“I have demonstrated an ability of working with a broad number of organizations and individuals to make things happen,” he said. “I think a collaborative, inclusive approach of getting stakeholders and everybody involved is the way to go.”
