Final phase of streetlight conversion begins this week

MEDICINE HAT, AB – The city will begin the final phase of streetlight conversion this week.

The Municipal Works Department will begin converting the remaining High Pressure Sodium street lights to energy efficient Light Emitting Diode (LED) lights. There are 5,000 lights which still need to be coverted in the final phase, all in the southern part of the city.

According to a city news release, the LED streetlight fixtures consume approximately 50 per cent less energy and have three to four times longer life expectancy than the existing HPS streetlights, resulting in significant energy and maintenance cost savings.  The LED fixtures will also enhance colour clarity on the streets which improves the visibility of the pedestrians and obstacles in the area illuminated by the streetlights.

Drivers are reminded to obey all traffic control devices during the project and use caution while driving through work zones.
