MEDICINE HAT, AB — Two schools in Medicine Hat officially celebrated their grand openings on Wednesday.

Education Minister David Eggen spent a full day in Medicine Hat. In the morning, he was a featured guest to celebrate the grand re-opening of Medicine Hat High School following its modernization. In the afternoon, Eggen travelled to Dr. Ken Sauer School, where he officially opened the Kindergarten to Grade 6 school.

“It’s truly wonderful,” said Eggen while at Hat High. “I was hear when we broke the sod a couple of years ago, and so to actually see the finished product, it’s kind of overwhelming, it has a real nice feel to it.

“I think a lot of kids mentioned that it’s kind of like a campus, a college campus, and everything contributes to good learning.”

The school features modern lab spaces and a new gymnasium, along with breakout rooms for students

Eggen says the Hat High modernization was a challenge due to having the students at school at the same time as construction. However, he says the end result speaks for itself.

“I think they did a good job having kids move from one place to another,” he said. “The final result is worth it. It’s truly a lovely place that will be making memories and positive outcomes for students for generations to come.”

More than 50 new and modernized schools opened in Alberta this fall.
