MEDICINE HAT, AB — The Medicine Hat Tigers will be without one of their top forwards for most of the season.

The team learned Thursday that Mason Shaw suffered a torn ACL in his right knee while at Minnesota Wild training camp. Shaw will undergo surgery on Sept. 25.

“Right now, we’re looking at a best case scenario of about six months (for recovery),” said assistant coach Bobby Fox.

Shaw, who finished second in scoring with the Tigers last year, suffered the injury on Saturday at a prospects tournament game with the Minnesota Wild, after a player with the Columbus Blue Jackets fell on his leg. Shaw was drafted by the Wild in this year’s draft.

“It was just kind of an awkward play behind the net in the offensive zone,” he said over the phone from Minnesota. “There was a bit of a battle going with me and another guy, and he just kind of fell beside me, and just landed on my knee and it buckled in.”

Shaw underwent an MRI in Minnesota on Wednesday, where the tear was discovered. In addition to the ACL tear, there is also some damage to his meniscus.

“In the days leading up to the MRI, I was trying to to positive and hope for the best, but it’s definitely disappointing, ” said Shaw. “But, it’s a little bit of adversity, and I’ll get through it.”

In his rookie season with the Tigers, Shaw’s season was shortened to 23 games after suffering a similar injury to his left knee. He says this most recent injury is very similar.

“The positive thing about this is that I know I can come back from it, and my left knee is stronger because of it,” he said.

After his surgery, Shaw says he will stick around Minnesota for two weeks for rehab before returning to Canada.

He says he plans to work hard to get his knee back in shape, and hopefully return to the Tigers by the end of the regular season or playoffs.
