PINCHER CREEK, AB — The provincial government is working on a re-entry plan for one of the areas evacuated due to the Kenow wildfire that has expanded into southwest Alberta.

According to Alberta Emergency Alert, the plan is being developed for residents in the Twin Butte area, located roughly 30 minutes south of Pincher Creek. Details will be posted on the MD of Pincher Creek website as soon as they are available.

Alberta Emergency says a mandatory evacuation notice remains in place for South Highway 505 to Waterton Park and Castle Mountain Resort, and a local state of emergency is in effect.

A reception centre has been activated at the Vertical Church, located at 1200 Ken Thornton Boulevard in Pincher Creek. Residents evacuating should go the reception centre or call 403-904-8016 to register.

As of Wednesday night, Waterton, Cardston County and a section of the Blood Reserve remain under a mandatory evacuation order.

The Kenow wildfire currently covers approximately 44,000 hectares, as of Wednesday night, though cooler temperatures have helped improve firefighting conditions.
