Suspected mail thief in custody following K9 pursuit

MEDICINE HAT, ALTA- One man is in police custody, following a pursuit on Sunday afternoon.

According to the Medicine Hat Police Service, the pursuit began after a man was seen in the 500 block of 9 Street Southeast. Police had been informed the man was in the possession of stolen mail after going through postal boxes in the area, and attempted to track him down.

While they were unsuccessful at first, the suspect returned to the same area a few hours later. Around 1 p.m., police located the man, and pursued him. Through the course of the pursuit, the K9 unit became involved, and the man gave up.

He did not sustain any bite wounds during the incident.

The man is now in custody, waiting on a bail hearing. He is facing charges of possession of stolen property (mail and identifications) possession of methamphetamine, resisting police, and robbery, due to an incident which took place on September 5.

Police indicated the man had gone to Harv’s Convenience along Dunmore Road, and allegedly attempted to steal food, lottery tickets, and cigarettes. The store clerk attempted to prevent the theft, and the two got in a ‘tug of war’.

The clerk was not injured in the incident.
