ELKWATER, AB – One final chance to introduce the sport of dragon boat racing to the public this summer in Elkwater.

On Saturday morning, the Medicine Hat Dragon Boat Association held their final demonstration event of the season, with boats hitting the water shortly before noon.

It was a mix of veterans and dragon boat racing rookies, including a few anchors and reporters from CHAT News.

The first trip saw all 25+ racers using the large training boat for over half an hour, while the large group was separated into teams for the second outing in the afternoon.

Director of Team Sister Power Dawn Lebsack said ‘newbies’ found out very quickly how conditions can change from race to race.

“There’s always obstacles in the race, be it wind, water, waves, life,” said Lebsack. “But, it’s neat [because] people don’t realize it is hard work and it is a lot of fun, because you do have to work together as a team.”

Along with introducing many to the gruelling sport, Saturday’s event also served as a wind up to the 2017 season for the MHDBA.

All of Medicine Hat’s three dragon boat teams competed in at least two tournaments this summer, spanning from Lethbridge, to Calgary, to Regina over the Labour Day weekend.

For a 500 metre race, the goal for Team Sister Power is to glide across the finish line with a time under three minutes.

Lebsack said for the competitive squads, forming a connection with your teammates translates to success on the lake.

“Being a part of the team is being in time, that is what gets you across the finish line,” she said. “Everybody’s paddle has to hit the water at the same time because if one person is doing it on their own, one person doesn’t win the race.”

Those wanting to join the Snap Dragons, Sister Power, Thunderstrokes, or just wanting to try the sport next spring can contact the Medicine Hat Dragon Boat Association.

A mixed squad is also available under the Team Prairie Fire banner for Gas City Dragon Boating.
