INTERVIEW: Batsel goes wire-to-wire to defend Southeastern Open title

MEDICINE HAT, AB — Dillon Batsel looked unbeatable at his home course, successfully defending the Southeastern Open men’s crown at the Connaught Golf Course over the weekend.

The club’s assistant pro was the lone golfer to finish in red figures following three days of competition, posting rounds of 73-71-71 (215) to card 4-under par.

“I didn’t put myself in trouble over the three days,” said Batsel, who shaved six strokes off his winning score from last year. “I was never re-teeing, I was never in a hazard. Ball striking wise I was fairway (to) green for the most part. It was just stress free golf.”

Mitch Kurtz, winner of the Connaught Men’s Club Championship earlier this summer, entered the final round trailing Batsel by seven. Although his 75 on Monday wasn’t enough to put any sort of pressure on Batsel, it solidified a second place finish — five strokes up on Ryan Werre in third.

Becky Martin ran away from the competition to claim the Ladies Championship. The CCAA National bronze medalist from 2016 finished the tournament at +14, six strokes better than Cathy Fisher.

Jim Duce made easy work in the Senior Men’s Championship as well, carding rounds of 74-72-75 to win by 13 strokes over Gary Kavanaugh. Duce, who’s also the morning radio DJ on CHAT TV’s sister radio station CHAT 94.5 FM, was one of just two players to shoot a round under par, joining only Batsel.
