Police Commission getting two additional members

MEDICINE HAT, AB —Medicine Hat’s City Council approved a request from the Police Commission to add two additional public members to the board.

In the proposal, the commission said periodic absences by members means there have been times where there aren’t enough members present to make decisions on issues.

The commission said two additional public members would increase diversity and create ‘richer’ decision making.

Commission members are volunteers, but they do receive a $50 vehicle expense allowance each month, meaning the two additional members would increase the cost by $1,200 per year.

City council members asked the police commission representatives to look at eliminating that allowance.

The commission will now be comprised of two city council representatives and five public members when the boards and commission positions are appointed this fall.
