MEDICINE HAT, AB — More than 100 golfers from across Western Canada are hitting Connaught Golf Club this weekend.

The club is hosting the 84th annual Southeastern Open this weekend. The tournament is southern Alberta’s last big golf tournament.

“There’s some great golf out there,” said Derek Berger, head professional at Connaught. “It’s something for everyone. We have a senior men’s division, and a ladies division, and we’re going to have about 120 players playing.”

Last year, Dillon Batsel won the open, and is back again looking to defend his championship, but he’s up against some stiff competition.

It’s expected to come down to Batsel and Ryan Werre, who won the Victoria Day Classic in May. The two players have developed a friendly rivalry over the years.

“They’ve been friends for a long time, and I’ve known them both for a long time,” said Berger. “They definitely have that competitive edge towards each other. They compete against each other lots, in various different things, and not just golf. The rivalry is there, and the competitiveness is definitely there.”

Berger adds the tournament is considered a welcoming event for golfers of all skill levels.

There’s still time for those interested to register for the tournament. Those who wish to register can contact Connaught at (403) 526-0737.
