INTERVIEWS: Williams, Kohler making waves in training camp

MEDICINE HAT, AB — It’s always a bit of a gamble to select a player in the CHL Import Draft.

The Medicine Hat Tigers took two swipes at European talent earlier this summer, and landed two sizable, smooth skating players.

Forward Mick Kohler from Cologne, Germany was taken in the first round. It sounds like he’ll be suiting up for the Orange and Black this season, already skating with several Tabbie vets at the Family Leisure Centre ahead of training camp.

In the second round, Medicine Hat nabbed long-shot Swedish defenceman Linus Nassen, who was drafted in the third round of the 2016 NHL Entry Draft to the Florida Panthers.

Tigers head coach and GM Shaun Clouston is still uncertain on Nassen’s status, saying it’s not looking good on him joining the team in the near future. Things could change once Panthers training camp kicks off.

This opens the door for defenceman Kristians Rubins to build off his first campaign last season; hopefully one which sees less inactivity due to injuries.

Kohler isn’t the only forward ready for a heavy workload with the Tabbies.

There’s a lot of buzz around Josh Williams as he prepares for his first full season in the WHL. The Langley, B.C. product has been itching for the opportunity ever since his fifth overall selection in the 2016 WHL Bantam Draft.

The 16 year old scored his first career WHL goal on February 21st against the Moose Jaw Warriors as a call up, which coincidentally was also his home debut.

CHAT TV spoke with both Williams and Kohler (who’s still working on his English) to hear what they hope to accomplish in Tigers training camp this weekend.
