UPDATE: Grass fire near Methanex under investigation

MEDICINE HAT, AB — A potentially dangerous situation was averted on Wednesday after a large grass fire was sparked in a field near Methanex.

Fire crews received the call at approximately 11:30 a.m. Crews from both Medicine Hat and Cypress County were called in to deal with the blaze.

The fire was under control within an hour, and there were no injuries or damage to the plant.

Deputy Fire Chief Lance Purcell says hay bales in the field made fighting the fire a challenge.

“There are hay bales that are filled with, they have fire in them, so they’re difficult to put out,” he said Wednesday afternoon. “We’re asking for some equipment to be brought in so they can tear apart those bales.
