Committee to review budget amendment for U-17 bid

MEDICINE HAT, AB — Public service committee members will meet on Monday to discuss the 2018 World U-17 Hockey Challenge budget amendment.

Staff are recommending that council approve an operating grant of $125,000 and act as a guarantor for the event for the amount of $1,200,000, ‘which would only be relied upon if the event revenues do not offset the expenses to host the tournament’ stated the report.

The grant would be provided to the Host Committee if the bid is successful.

The report also states the estimated economic benefit for the community to be between $4,000,000 and $6,000,000.

Council voted in favour of supporting the bid to host the challenge last month.

Mayor Ted Clugston told CHAT News it was an easy proposal to support, saying “it’s just good for the economy, the service industry, the hotels, the restaurants, everybody.”
