Prospects blow out Mavericks; square up West Final 1-1

MEDICINE HAT, AB — A night the Medicine Hat Mavericks would soon like to forget.

Scoring five runs in the fifth inning, on the heals of a three-hit performance from pitcher Erik Sabrowski, the Edmonton Prospects charged through the Mavericks with a 9-0 victory Tuesday night. The series is now locked at 1-1.

Their best-of-five rematch from last year’s Division Championship is down to a best-of-three as it shifts to the provincial capital for Game 3 and 4.

Nick Spillman was nearly unstoppable at the plate, going 4/5 with three RBIs and a run. Teammates Mackenzie Parlow and Michael Gahan batted in a pair of runs each while lead-off hitter Jake Lanferman crossed home plate three times.

But the big story out of this one was the performance from Prospects starter Sabrowski. Playing for his hometown team, the right-hander held the Mavs off the scoreboard in a three-hit complete game.

Tossing for the Red and White was a different story. Tyler Skinner lasted four innings on nine hits and five earned runs. Five separate arms approached the Mavs mound, surrendering a combined 15 hits.

Medicine Hat also racked up four errors to Edmonton’s blank slate.

Game 3 is set for Wednesday at 7:05 p.m. from RE/MAX Field.
