MEDICINE HAT, AB – The Medicine Hat Mavericks have started the WMBL West Finals on the right foot, taking down the Edmonton Prospects 5-3 in Game 1 on Monday night.

It was a hot start for the Mavericks, with a Colton Wright single in the first inning bringing home Blake Rowlett from second to make it a 1-0 ballgame.

Two batters later it was Chris Caffrey joining in on the action, smacking an RBI double to the outfield bringing in a pair of runs and giving Medicine Hat a 3-0 lead after their first at-bats.

The early offensive production continued in the third inning for the Mavericks, with Caffrey once again padding his stats with an RBI triple, scoring Wright and boosting the home side’s lead to 4-0.

Louie Canjura became the next Mavericks hitter to make contact, picking up a double in the fourth inning which turned into a triple following an Edmonton throwing error, and scoring the speedy David Salguiero.

Medicine Hat’s first big defensive blunder of the series came in the fifth, with throwing errors charged to Canjura and Salguiero allowing Edmonton’s Jake Lanferman to score all the way from first base and make it a 5-1 game.

In the eighth inning and the Prospects at the plate, Michael Gahan grounded out to first base but was able to buy time for Lanferman to cross the dish and close the gap to 5-2.

Later in the eighth, Prospects first baseman Nick Spillman got on the score sheet with an RBI single scoring Zane Takhar.

That would be the end of the evening for Mavericks starter Brady Tedesco, as he allowed two earned runs given up on seven hits and three strikeouts over a solid seven and two-thirds innings of baseball.

Connor Deeds finished out the ninth inning for Medicine Hat, as the Mavericks hung on for a key Game 1 victory 5-3 over Edmonton.

It was the Chris Caffrey show at the plate for the Mavericks, going 2-4 with a game-high three RBIs, while Canjura and Wright also drove in runs.

With a 1-0 series lead in the best-of-five set, Medicine Hat hosts the Prospects once again on Tuesday for Game 2.

Opening pitch at Athletic Park is a 7:05 pm start.

In the East Finals meanwhile, the Weyburn Beavers trounced the Swift Current 57s 12-4 in the opening game of their series on Monday.
