MEDICINE HAT, AB — The Medicine Hat Police Service are placing a special focus on impaired driving this month as part of the Strategic Traffic Enforcement Program.

In a news release, the Medicine Hat Police Service says impaired driving continues to be a concern, and is a primary focus of the service throughout the year.

So far in 2017, Police have laid 73 impaired driving charges, and issued an additional 29 vehicle suspensions for other alcohol or drug-related driving offences. There have also beeing 18 motor vehicle collisions this year where alcohol was a primary factor, according to police.

Police say their goal is to eliminate alcohol-related collisions on Medicine Hat roads, and plan to use education, cooperation from drivers and a zero-tolerance enforcement approach.

Police remind drivers they have the ability to issue suspensions for operating while under the influence of illicit drugs, prescription drugs, fatigue and medical and physical disabilities that may affect a person’s driving. They add if drivers find themselves under the influence of an intoxicant, they should find alternative travel home.

Checkstops have already taken place at several times this summer, and more will be scheduled as the summer continues.
