Dry weather extinguishes backyard fire pits in Lethbridge

LETHBRIDGE – Backyard fire pits in Lethbridge and Coaldale will have to sit unlit.

The city has expanded an open fire ban to include backyard pits, blaming the prolonged dry spell. The ban is in effect until further notice.

The town of Coaldale has also included backyard fire pits in its complete fire ban. Only contained fire pits and barbecues that use propane are permitted.

At the same time, the provincial government has expanded its burning ban in the Forest Protection Area, with only propane and gas camp stoves and portable propane fire pits allowed.

It previously stretched along the mountains and foothills from Waterton north to Highway 532. It now extends all the way to the Red Deer River.

At this point, no fire bans are in place for Medicine Hat. Cypress County is presently under a fire restriction, but outdoor fire pits and barbecues are still allowed.
