MEDICINE HAT, AB — The animals at the Medicine Hat SPCA are getting closer to having a new home.

Last month, the SPCA launched the Extreme Shelter Makeover campaign, with the goal of raising $700,000 for renovations.

The organization announcing it had reached its first goal of $150,000 for the first phase of the project.

The money will be used to renovate the shelter’s holding area for the animals, which will begin later this summer.

The SPCA said in June the building is 33 years old, and starting to show its age. Many of the kennels and cages have rust spots, and improvements are needed to the ventilation systems and flooring.

The second phase of the project for the SPCA involves raising $400,000 for an expansion to the facility, which they hope to start next summer. The third phase involves raising $150,000 for the shelter’s adoption area.

Donations for the project can be submitted online on the SPCA’s website.
