Oil spill field training being held at Echo Dale tomorrow

Jul 12, 2017 | 9:28 AM

Practice for an oil spill will be held tomorrow at Echo Dale Regional Park.

Transcanada Pipelines will be taking part in field training at the park. Throughout the morning, boats and boom deployment will be used on the South Saskatchewan River, and the Echo Dale boat launch will be used for river access, as well as the parking lot.

The overflow parking lot, located 300 yards west of the launch road, will also be used. Activities will commence around 8 am and finish about 1 pm. In the afternoon, workers will be training in wildlife deterrence.

Propane cannons will be used to simulate shotgun blasts, as well as kites, wavy men, floating scarecrows, predator effigies, and calls of predatory animals.

The day’s events will be finished by 4:30 pm.

Signage will be posted in the areas and a liaison person will be available to answer any questions or concerns. Anyone wishing to use the boat launch during the morning will be briefed, and allowed access in a safe and controlled manner.
