Special Olympics Alberta Summer Games start today

MEDICINE HAT, AB — After months of preparation and hard work from athletes and organizers, the games are ready to begin.

The Special Olympics Alberta Summer Games officially get underway Friday, and run until Sunday.

Several events will take place this afternoon. Bocce takes place at the Family Leisure Centre starting at 2 p.m., while five and 10-pin bowling run from 2:15-4:30 p.m. at Panorama Lanes. The public is invited to watch the events.

The final leg of the Law Enforcement Torch Run gets underway at 5 p.m. at the Saamis Teepee, and will wrap up at approximately 8 p.m. at the Cypress Centre Fieldhouse, where opening ceremonies for the games are taking place.

Doors for the opening ceremony open at 6 p.m., and is rush seating. The ceremony gets underway at 7 p.m., with remarks from several dignitaries, including the Alberta Lieutenant Governor Lois E. Mitchell, Medicine Hat MLA Bob Wanner, Medicine Hat-Cardston-Warner MPGlen Motz, Mayor Ted Clugston and Special Olympics Champions Network members Catriona Le May Doan. The ceremony is expecting to have over 2,000 spectators and is free and open to the public.
