Libke shines as Mavericks crush Prospects 10-3

MEDICINE HAT, AB —Jared Libke had himself a night to remember.

The Saskatoon, SK product struck out seven Prospects batters while allowing just five hits as the Medicine Hat Mavericks defeated Edmonton 10-3 on Wednesday night.

It didn’t take long for Libke to get under the Prospects skin. The righty fanned the first two batters of the game and kept Edmonton hitless until Dean Olson doubled in the third inning.

Although Edmonton was first to score in the fourth frame, not long after the Mavericks offense began to unload.

Tanner Helms and Jackson Freed began the sixth inning with a double and a single respectively, helping lead a five-run frame to take an 8-1 lead.

The Prospects secured three of their five hits in the top of the seventh, throwing two runs on the board in the process. Rather than relieving Libke of his duties, field manager Mike Thompson elected to keep the Arkansas-Monticello sophomore in to start the eighth.

The decision spoke for itself. Libke answered the call by striking out two more before leaving with his second victory of the season.

Medicine Hat added another run in the same frame and tacked on another in the eighth.

Right hander Justin Simanek closed out the top of the ninth allowing one hit with two strikeouts.

The Mavericks are arguably the hottest team in the league over the last three weeks. Since June 15th, the Boys of Summer dawn a 13-5 record, and now sit a season best three games above .500 with a 15-12 record.

The West Division standings are a log jam with the Mavericks sitting fourth — half a game back of Edmonton and two games back of Lethbridge and Okotoks for the division lead.

The Mavericks return to action on Friday, kicking off a three-game weekend series against the Fort McMurray Giants.
