Cypress County purchases building for new fire station

DUNMORE, AB — Cypress County council has voted to approve a budget amendment towards the purchase of a new building to house its fire station.

Council will set aside nearly $1.3 million dollars from its budget to purchase the Outlaw Collision building in Dunmore and transform it into the new fire hall.

Dustin Vossler, councillor for Ward 6, says the new building has lots to offer county firefighters.

“I think it’s a great start the way we’re going,” he said over the phone from Seven Persons. “It looks good, it’s going to be a great fit.

“It’s got some room for immediate expansion of our fleet, and some potential for growth with the amount of land that’s there.”

The county voted earlier this year to cancel the fire services agreement with the city when it expires at the end of the year. Vossler says talks are ongoing, but could not provide updates and their status.

The county currently has nine fire stations in its boundaries and three mutual aid contracts.

Vossler says the county is in the process of hiring contractors to perform maintenance work on the new building to get it ready for firefighters to move in.

“There’s some ventilation that has to be changed, there’s a sump pit that has to be filled in, some exterior work to remove the current decaling on the building, and make it so that it’s a suitable building for a firehall,” he said.

Vossler says work will likely start at the end of the month, and firefighters will likely move their trucks into the building withing the next several months.

He says two trucks will call the new station home, and he adds four to six trucks will move into the station by next year.
