MEDICINE HAT, AB — One of the two men charged in the death of a Medicine Hat last November has pleaded guilty to a lesser charge.

Jacob Porfoun entered a guilty plea to manslaughter in Medicine Hat provincial court on Wednesday. He was originally charged with second-degree murder, along with Aaron Anand Ford, in connection with the death of Dustin Hewer last November.

Hewer, 24, died of “sharp force trauma” outside of a home on 21st Street NE on November 5.

Porfoun was sentenced to six-and-a-half years in prison, though with pre-trial custody factored in, he will spend a little over five and a half years behind bars.

A publication ban is in effect concerning Porfoun’s involvement in Hewer’s murder, because Ford’s charges of second-degree murder are still before the court.

Ford remains in custody and makes his next appearance on June 28.
