EDMONTON — The province is investing $75 million to help teachers and students for the upcoming school year.

The three local school divisions are all receiving hundreds of thousands of dollars in funding as part of the Classroom Improvement Fund, part of the agreement reached between the Alberta Teachers’ Association and the Teachers Employer Bargaining association in May.

Medicine Hat School District No. 76 is receiving $913,000, while Prairie Rose School Division is receiving $473,000 and the Medicine Hat Catholic School Division is receiving $385,000.

The amount of funding each division receives is based on last year’s enrolment numbers, according to the news release, and the money will be distributed to school boards during the 2017-18 school year. The money can be used for multiple initiatives, including hiring new teachers and support staff, in-classroom resources and professional development.

School boards and teachers will create a joint proposal for how they will spend the Classroom Improvement Funding. The deadline for proposals is Dec. 15.
