Horse euthanized following chuckwagon crash on Friday

MEDICINE HAT, AB – A horse had to be euthanized following a collision between riders on the second day of World Professional Chuckwagon Association races in Medicine Hat.

According to a news release from the Medicine Hat Exhibition & Stampede, Blaid Flad and Dayton Sutherland were involved in a collision in the first heat Friday night. The collision took place during the fourth turn on the track.

The two drivers and their outriders were not injured, however one horse was seriously injured.

“All horse care protocols and the WPCA Code of Care were in place, and the horse was immediately placed under a veterinarian’s expert care,” the news release said. “Both the Medicine Hat Exhibition & Stampede and the WPCA take animal welfare seriously.”

The release states the horse was euthanized in accordance with Section 3 of the WPCA Care protocols, under the direct supervision and recommendation of two veterinarians.

Gary Gorst was the top finisher Friday night, with a time of 1:02.21. Chad Fike finished in second place with 1:02.77 and Obrey Motowylo won third place with a time of 1:02.79.

The third day of races is scheduled Saturday at 7 p.m.
