MEDICINE HAT, AB — A Medicine Hat man is facing a mischief charge after allegedly providing police with false information about a man falling into the South Saskatchewan River one week ago.

Redcliff RCMP, Southeast Alberta Search and Rescue and the Medicine Hat Fire Service conducted a large scale search of the river on June 7, and were on the river for almost 12 hours searching for the man.

The search was called off after Medicine Hat police determined the information provided was false, citing the lack of physical evidence and “inconsistencies in the witness statements,” according to a news release at the time of the incident.

Drew Tweed, 41, is charged with one count of public mischief. He makes his next court appearance on July 27.

The search on June 7 was not related to the search for a man from British Columbia who went missing in the river on May 31. The man has still not been found.
