MEDICINE HAT, AB — Today is the final day to register for one of the most inspiring tennis tournaments in the city all year.

The Barrie Shave Memorial Tournament returns to the Medicine Hat Tennis Club. The doubles tournament raises money for cancer research, and could begin play on Wednesday, weather permitting.

“I think its significance is reflected in the fact we’re starting earlier and earlier every year,” said Ken Clement, manager of the tennis club.

Last year, 84 players took part, raising $8,300 for the Canadian Cancer Society and the club’s junior tennis program. Clement says the competition will be high through the week, as the tournament attracts many players, both experienced and novice who participate because of the positive impact on the community.

“This is our most inclusive tournament,” said Clement. “We emphasize the fact that it’s a fundraiser for the Canadian Cancer Society and our kid’s program, and therefore, we want everybody to participate.

“We have beginners participating as well as some of our strongest players. On the court, we’re all equal, having a good time and hopefully we’re raising some money in the process.

The club is still expecting a few last minute entries, as some well known players are not on the seeding list, including Calvin and Mitch Heller.

Those who want to register can call the club at 403-527-4466 or register in person at 1711 21st Street Southeast, next to the Crestwood Pool. The deadline is 6 p.m. tonight.

The tournament wraps up on Sunday.
