Police issue warning about parking ticket scam

Medicine Hat residents should keep a watchful eye on their email inboxes.

According to a warning notice sent out by the Medicine Hat Police Service, a number of local residents have been receiving emails from a company describing themselves as Imperial Parking Canada Corp, claiming the email recipient has unpaid fines.

The police release indicates that the emails have been confirmed to have been linked to a scam, and feature potentially virus-laden links.

If a user goes to open the links without active anti-virus software or a firewall program, their computer system may become infected.

In their warning, the police state that the municipal government has no contract with Imperial Parking Canada (Impark), and that notifications for unpaid fines are not sent out via email. The police also recommended that individuals use caution when opening links or attachments in unexpected or unsolicited emails.

An example of the fraudulent email’s wording was included with the warning. It follows below;

The City of Medicine Hat records indicate that a parking tickets issued to the vehicle described below has not been paid. this penalties and applicable fines area past due and must be paid within the next 14 calendar days. Driver Records show that you are/were the registered proprietor at the time this vehicle was cited. Consequently you are rightfully responsible for responding to this notice.
