MEDICINE HAT, AB — A CHAT Television segment which shines a spotlight on the work of non-profit organizations was recognized by industry professionals last week.

CHAT Television received a Gold Medal for Television (under 150,000 market) from the Western Association of Broadcasters at its annual conference in Banff last week for the Heart of the City segment, which airs monthly.

Gold Medals are given to Canadian broadcasters “for outstanding contribution to Canadian broadcasting industry in the area of community service,” according to the organization’s website.

“It was amazing to get that award,” said Jaime Gale, producer of the segment. “It was something that we wanted to do to help out in the community, but to be recognized on that level was just exhilarating.”

Heart of the City began airing in October last year to give a voice to the non-profit organizations in the city, says Gale.

“We want people to see what they’re for and how the community can help out,” she said. “It’s a way to spotlight them. We often hear of organizations within our community, but we don’t always know what they’re used for.”

Organizations profiled in Heart of the City include the Medicine Hat Women’s Shelter Society, the Champion’s Centre, the Medicine Hat SPCA and the Children’s Health and Development Centre.

Gale adds the award gives her more motivation to tell the stories of the community.

“The award is exciting, but why we do it is the reason why we do it,” she said. “We want to help our community get better, and know of ways they can get help and give help.”

Gale thanked John Kuepper, Frank Buck and Betsy Morales for their work to help produce the segment each month.
