MEDICINE HAT, AB — A closure order on a local sushi restaurant has been lifted.

Alberta Health Services issued an executive order on Sushi and Thai on Carry Drive on June 6th.

Health inspectors received a complaint and saw concerns around the way food was being handled and prepared.

Dr. Vivien Suttorp said an inspection was completed Thursday night and everything was back up to standards.

“The health inspections will continue obviously during their annual inspections and then random inspections,” she said. “I think the other important piece for individuals to know is that whenever there’s a concern around a food establishment someone can always call environmental public health to share the concerns and then we will go in and inspect that restaurant based on the complaint.”

Many of the issues listed in the report were around how the food was being handled and prepared.

Sushi and Thai owner Alex Jiang told CHAT News that they’d had problems with their freezer, but that it was being fixed.

Other concerns were brought up around contaminated cloths and sponges being used. Inspectors found equipment and food contact surfaces were also not being cleaned and sanitized properly.

The inspection report also noted that food handlers showed a lack of knowledge in safe food handling and need more training.

AHS said that four employees have been trained in food safety and the operator was advised to sign up for additional training.

They have also provided Cantonese education material to the owner which will be hung up in the facility.

AHS said they’re also exploring the idea of using a translator from Calgary, something that has been done in the past. A Cantonese speaking inspector from Calgary would FaceTime with the operator and local inspector to make sure everything is understood.

The restaurant will be monitored closely to make sure everything stays up to public health standards. AHS said that’s standard practise with all critical violations.
