Nova Scotia Liberals win their second straight majority government
HALIFAX — After a long night of hard-fought election battles, Nova Scotia’s Liberal government won a second straight majority victory early Wednesday, marking the first time the province has seen back-to-back majorities since 1988.
“Wow, what a night,” Premier Stephen McNeil told supporters after midnight. “We’ve seen tonight why every vote counts.”
Nearly six hours after the polls closed, the Liberals won 27 seats, enough for a majority in the 51-seat house of assembly. An informal tally suggested more than 15 women will sit in the legislature, a new record.
The Progressive Conservatives, led by Jamie Baillie, won 17 ridings, and the NDP were elected in seven.
