Committee extends fire services agreement with Cypress County until end of year

MEDICINE HAT, AB — The Medicine Hat and Cypress County Fire Departments are still at the discussion table regarding a new fire services agreement.

During Wednesday’s Public Services Committee meeting, the committee supported an extension to the contract with the county.

Cypress County voted in April to allow its agreement with the city regarding fire services to expire this year. The agreement was set to expire in June, but has been extended to December.

The county is currently conducting a review of its fire services.

Deputy Fire Chief Brian Webster says talks between the two fire services are ongoing, and he says he’s hoping to find a solution to benefit everyone.

“It’s important for both parties,” he said. “We provide a level of service for the county residents, and there’s a lot of city residents who live within the first response area for the city of Medicine Hat Fire Service within the county.

“It’s important to sit down and have these discussions, as we’ve done in the past.”

City council will officially vote on the extension during its meeting on June 5.
