MEDICINE HAT, AB — The Fight Network is tuning into Medicine Hat next month.

The sports channel which broadcasts in hundreds of thousands of homes and in 38 different countries, is teaming up with Z-Promotions to televise Fight Night 3 in Medicine Hat, which takes place June 10 at the Canalta Centre.

Peter Jelinski, Canalta Centre general manager, says the event will likely result in the largest exposure the Canalta Centre has ever had.

“We do get a lot of exposure that we’re known for hockey, but television wise, we’ve only been real regionally in Western Canada through Shaw,” he said. “This is will the first time Medicine Hat and the Canalta Centre will be known right across the world, hopefully as the home of MMA fighting.”

Prior to coming to the Canalta Centre and producing the two previous Fight Night cards, Jelinski says he worked in other markets to help produce MMA events. He says when the Fight Network saw the footage of the first two events, they described it as “broadcast quality.”

“The fights are good, the production all-around it is good, and it just built from there,” he said.

Alin Halmagean, vice-president of media relations with Z-Promotions, says the company is excited to be able to present a strong card, which includes a number of fighters from southern Alberta.

“One of our missions is to find a local star, that new guy that can become a world class fighter and can become one of the best in the world,” he said.

In the main event, Joe Riggs, a veteran fighter who has fought in UFC, Strikeforce and multiple other promotions, takes on Sylvan Lake’s Ryan Machan.

The event will also see Josh Heinz out of Lethbridge challenge Winnipeg’s Steve Roy.

On top of a stacked card, Fight Night 3 will feature the first fighter from Medicine Hat to enter the cage in half a decade. Rick Bitz will challenge Grande Prairie’s Randy Mahon in a welterweight bout.

Halmagean says he’s been hearing Bitz has been training hard for the fight, which will be his professional debut.

Tickets for the event are available at the Canalta Centre box office, or online at ticketmaster.ca.
