Date set for conclusion of preliminary hearing into death of baby

LETHBRIDGE – A continuation date has been set for the preliminary hearing for Tyler Brian Hogan.

The Lethbridge man faces one count of second degree murder, in connection with the 2016 death of nine-month old Austin Wright.

The prelim – which will determine if there’s enough evidence for the case to proceed to trial – started in April, but had to be split up as the Crown and defence were still waiting for forensic medical evidence to come in.

The continuation was set Thursday morning in Lethbridge Provincial Court, with the two sides noting that it will take an additional four days, beginning Aug. 14, 2017.

According to Lethbridge Police, on Apr. 28, 2016, EMS responded to a report of a baby in medical distress at a residence along the 600 block of 17 Street North. Upon arrival paramedics located Austin inside the home, not breathing and in cardiac arrest. He was transported to the Chinook Regional Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Hogan was then arrested and charged in July of 2016, and was later released on conditions that he post $50,000 cash or $100,000 surety.

Evidence presented during the prelim is covered under a publication ban.
