MEDICINE HAT, AB — The Monsignor McCoy Junior Varsity baseball team got their season off to a good start Saturday with a pair of exhibition games against the Calgary Redbirds.

In the first contest the Colts beat Calgary 10-3, and in the second game McCoy won 22-8.

Colts head coach Rob McDonnell says the strong start is hopefully a sign of things to come.

“We know we’ve got a good group of kids here,” McDonnell said in between games. “We just try to tell our guys if we do things the right way and have a good attitude things are going to end up taking care of themselves in regards to wins and losses.”

Ashtyn Street picked up the win for McCoy in the first game after tossing four solid innings, allowing three runs on six hits while striking out five Redbirds.

“It’s always nice to start off the season with a win,” said the grade 10 student who also went 5 for 5 and crossed the plate five times in their second game against Calgary.

In other high school baseball action Saturday Hat High beat Eagle Butte 13-0 as three Mohawk pitchers combined for a no-hitter in the preseason tune up.
