Calfrac hiring in Medicine Hat but has no plans to open operations base

MEDICINE HAT, AB — Calfrac Well Services is looking to hire more people in Medicine Hat to add to their oilfield servicing operations.

In March of last year, Calfrac closed down their operations in Redcliff and dozens of people were let go.

The company said it was one of the hardest decisions it had to make because Calfrac got its start working for the City of Medicine Hat.

Calfrac said it has hired back around 40 people from the Medicine Hat area.

Most of the work the company has right now is in central and northern Alberta around Red Deer and Grande Prairie.

At this point, Calfrac has no plans to reopen a full operations base in Medicine Hat or Redcliff.

Scott Treadwell, Calfrac’s oilfield services and capital markets executive, said that would require the price of natural gas to go up.

“If the market for natural gas continues to improve and producer spending starts to shift towards dry natural gas, that’s likely to include southern Alberta and Medicine Hat,” said Treadwell, over the phone from Calgary. “And if the producers go there then we’re obviously going to follow them.”

Treadwell said if they do decide to open an office here, it will only be for staffing purposes and not a full operations centre at this time.
