Alberta Deputy Premier in hot water over ‘Sewer Rats’ comment

Mar 14, 2017 | 1:55 PM

EDMONTON — A video of Alberta’s Deputy Premier accusing the opposition of associating with “sewer rats” has been viewed more than 140 thousand times on social media.

The video was posted on Facebook by Wildrose MLA Jason Nixon, who asked Sarah Hoffman in the legislature yesterday about when the NDP government would start making better choices.

Hoffman replied that while the NDP is working to make the lives of ordinary families better and is focused on hard hats, Wildrose is  “spending a lot of time with sewer rats.”

Nixon writes in his post that you can add that term to the long list of things the government has called hard-working Albertans.

In a statement released by the Wildrose, Nixon said constituents in his riding aren’t sewer rats, but proud Albertans who want to see their province headed in the right direction.

“The NDP seem more interested in talking down to Albertans, calling them sewer rats instead of listening to them and supporting them,” Nixon said in the statement. “I hope the Deputy Premier will immediately retract her remarks and apologize.”
