Wheatland wins Midget SCAHL South Conference championship

MEDICINE HAT, AB — Isaac Benoit scored twice and Ty Tarvyd turned away 28 shots as the Wheatland Chiefs shut out Lethbridge 5-0 to win the Midget SCAHL South Conference championship Sunday.

The Chiefs jumped out to a 3-0 lead a little past the midway point of the first period. In the next 40 minutes the team would tack on a goal in each of the final two frames.

But the defending champs weren’t about to tempt fate by touching the championship banner again this time around.

“Last year we touched it, took a bunch of pictures with it, and lost in the North/South game, so superstition I guess,” said head coach Matt Gass after the game. “They know there’s still two more things that we need to accomplish and I think they’re ready to go and get that done.”

Tarvyd made a wicked scrambling save to keep his shutout bid alive towards the end of the game, and the netminder says his team’s work ethic and depth is what has set them apart from their opponents this season.

“You look at our lineup and you go top to bottom, and I wouldn’t say were stacked, but every guy on that team knows what they’re doing and they go and do a job every single night,” said Tarvyd.

Wheatland will now face Airdrie in a best-of-three series next weekend to determine who moves onto provincials.

The Medicine Hat Hounds lost 4-3 in OT to Wheatland early Sunday in the semis.
